Things about Cooling Tower Certification

Compared with other manufacturing industries, cooling towers should not be regarded as large-scale industries, but as a cooling equipment with decades of development history, there is still a relatively broad market.


According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 1,000 manufacturers of cooling towers and accessories in China, most of which are small and medium-sized enterprises. The market competition is extremely fierce. With the development of the economy, the improvement of technology, and the improvement of people's living standards, higher requirements for cooling towers appeared, such as cooling capacity, energy saving, water saving, low noise, etc.  

  

So the question is, how do you judge whether a cooling tower meets these standards?  At least not by self boasting.


Therefore, comes the CTI certification organized by the Cooling Towers Institute, CCTI performance evaluation organized by the Cooling Equipment Branch of China General Machinery Industry Association, CQC energy saving and water saving certification organized by China Quality Certification Center, and Water saving certification organized by Beijing Xinhua Water Conservation Products Certification Co., Ltd. etc.    


Before we talk about it, let's take a look at four important indicators for judging the overall performance of a cooling tower.    



1.Cooling capacity    

That is, thermal performance. This is in the first place. There is no doubt that the cooling tower is a product of modern industry. Its inherent property is heat exchange. To evaluate the performance of a cooling tower, the first thing to consider is thermal performance. In domestic and international standards, the percentage of measured cooling capacity and design cooling capacity is generally specified to be not less than 95%. Of course, the resistance performance is also an important performance indicator of the cooling tower, but the resistance performance is generally used in the design of the cooling tower, and the certification test is not considered.


2.Energy efficiency    

I.E. the power consumption ratio. Due to the operation of the cooling tower (especially the motor-driven mechanical ventilation cooling tower), it is generally necessary to consume electric energy to ensure the continuous circulation of air in the tower, and the amount of electric energy consumption often determines the cooling efficiency of the tower. The new national standard GB/T 7190-2018, which will be implemented on November 1, 2019, divides the energy efficiency of cooling towers into five levels according to the power consumption ratio to guide and help consumers to choose energy-efficient and energy-saving products, among which:

Level 1 indicates that the product has reached the international advanced level, being the most energy-saving, that is, the lowest energy consumption;

Level 2 indicates that the power is saved;    

Level 3 indicates that the energy efficiency of the product is the average level of the Chinese market;    

Level 4 indicates that the product's energy efficiency is below the market average;    

Level 5 is the market access indicator;    

Products that do not meet the requirements are unqualified products. Therefore, the power consumption ratio is also a key parameter.


3.Water Drift Rate

That is, the percentage of water drifted from the cooling tower air outlet accounts for the tower cooling water. The high drift rate means that the cooling tower consumes more water. The water loss of the cooling tower consists of three parts: loss of evaporation water, loss of drifting water, and loss of sewage.


The loss of evaporation water is a inevitable part , while the sewage loss is relatively small, and the water saving is mainly reflected in the reduction of drifting water loss. Of course, installing a water eliminator is one of the most effective measures to reduce water drifting, but at the same time it will increase the resistance of the whole tower, resulting in increased energy consumption and reduced cooling capacity of the cooling tower.


Generally, the wind-blown water loss accounts for about 0.2%-0.5% of the circulating water. If it is not controlled, 1 set of cooling tower with a cooling water volume of 1000m3/h has a drifting loss of at least 7,200m3 if  operate 150 days per year. For a large-scale thermal system such as a power plant that is fully opened all year round, 1 set of cooling tower with a cooling water volume of 10,000 m3/h has the largest drift water loss up to 438,000 m3, that is  really a large number. Therefore, the drift rate is an important indicator of the water-saving performance of the cooling tower.


4.Noise

In the case of mechanical ventilation cooling towers, the noise mainly includes water droplet noise, fan noise and operating noise of mechanical equipment.    


The Law of the People's Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Noise Pollution has clearly defined environmental noise: industrial enterprises that produce environmental noise pollution should take effective measures to mitigate the impact of noise on the surrounding living environment. Therefore, many cooling towers are equipped with noise reduction devices. The revision of the national standard GB/T 7190 also stratifies the noise. It can be said that low noise is the general trend.    



The above are four very important indicators for judging the overall performance of the cooling tower. Of course, when selecting the cooling tower, the owner may also consider the floor space, tower structure, appearance, brand influence, service life, price and other factors,which not list one by one.  


Returning to the topic of certification, let's go down and see:  


  Organized by the Cooling Towers Institute--CTI certification

CTI was originally the abbreviation of America Cooling Towers Institute, and later changed to Cooling Towers Institute. It is a group organization of American cooling tower manufacturers, users and supporting enterprises.  

  

Currently, the CTI certification test is based on two standards, CTI ATC-105 and CTI STD-201. Among them, the CTI ATC-105 test standard is mainly used to measure whether the thermal performance of a certain cooling tower in a specific place meets the requirements of the buyer's contract, and is a one-time test for a specific cooling tower. The CTI STD-201 certification standard targets all models of the same series of cooling towers for a product line.   


However, the CTI certification test is only for the thermal performance of the cooling tower, and does not involve other tests and assessments such as noise, energy efficiency, water flow rate, tower material, etc.    


Organized by the Cooling Equipment Branch of China General Machinery Industry Association--CCTI performance evaluation

Referred to as CCTI certification. It is organized by the China General Machinery Industry Association Cooling Equipment Branch (CGMA Branch of Cooling Technology) to regulate the domestic cooling tower market and guide the healthy and sustainable development of the industry.    


The CCTI performance evaluation is based on the “Cooling Tower Performance Evaluation (Certification) Technical Specification”, and the certification target is all types of cooling towers of the same series.    


At present, the specific test work is entrusted to the National FRP Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, which is authorized by the National Certification and Accreditation Administration and has a third-party notarization. The qualified enterprises will be awarded by China General Machinery Industry Association. The *** company *** series cooling tower performance evaluation confirmation issued by the cooling equipment branch and the test report issued by the national glass steel product quality supervision and inspection center.    


In addition, the CCTI certification test must meet the current effective national standards for the thermal performance, energy consumption ratio, noise, and drift rate of the tested product, and is consistent with the manufacturer's stated rating.    


Organized by China Quality Certification Center--CQC energy saving and water saving certification    

The China Quality Certification Center (CQC) is a national-level certification body that has been approved by the Central Organization Establishment Committee and established by the State Administration of Market Supervision and commissioned by the State Certification and Accreditation Administration. Its product certification business mainly includes national compulsory product certification, CQC mark certification, and national voluntary product certification. It is also a third-party certification body authorized by the state to carry out energy conservation, water conservation ("section" labeling) and environmental product certification.    


As far as the cooling tower is concerned, the inspection is mainly based on the GB/T 7190 series standard, GB/T 18870-2011 and other standards. The test items also include thermal performance, water flow rate, noise, energy consumption and so on.    


Organized by Beijing Xinhua Water Conservation Products Certification Co., Ltd.--Water saving certification    

The company is a third-party certification institute initiated by the Ministry of Water Resources Comprehensive Enterprise, approved by the Ministry of Water Resources, approved by the National Certification and Accreditation Administration, and accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS). Service entity for product certification and water saving evaluation work.    


As far as the cooling tower is concerned, the testing basis is mainly GB/T 7190 series standard, GB/T 18870-2011, DB31/414-2008 and other standards. The test items include thermal performance, energy saving, water saving and so on.    


Since 2016, the company has cooperated with the General Equipment Industry Association Cooling Equipment Branch to share test results. Enterprises that pass the CCTI performance evaluation can directly apply for water-saving certification. After data review and field visits, they will issue corresponding water-saving and energy-saving certificates,mark quality level for cooling tower enterprises that meet the water saving and energy saving indicators without repeated testing.



It is not difficult to find that in addition to the US CTI certification, most of China's domestic certification or evaluation includes tests for indicators such as noise and energy efficiency. Why?    


The direct reason is that the standard specifications used are different. While the key point is the difference between national conditions.  


The population density in Europe and the United States is small, the residence is relatively scattered, and the energy is relatively abundant. Therefore, these countries and regions generally focus on the cooling capacity requirements of cooling tower products, and rarely involve product noise and energy consumption requirements, and are not mentioned in the specification.    


The actual situation in China is that the population and the density of residence are large, resources and energy are in short supply. Therefore, while satisfying the demand for refrigeration, our products must consider the impact of noise on the environment, consider the energy consumption ratio, and consider the degree of resource conservation. In other words, in addition to examining the cooling capacity, we must also consider the requirements of noise, energy efficiency and other aspects.  


Technically speaking, it's relatively easy for a cooling tower to meet the cooling capacity only. However,except cooling capacity, to meet the three indicators of noise, energy efficiency and water saving at the same time is rather difficult , it need enough technical support.
